Prayer for the opening of Parliament
I (Dean Rob) was invited to attend the opening of the first session of the fifteenth legislative assembly of the Northern Territory this morning. The opening ceremony included various cultural welcomes for the elected members and prayers lead by Catholic Bishop Charles Gauci.
As the new parliament begins, it is a good time to be reminded that the New Testament calls on us to pray for those in authority:
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. - 1 Timothy 2:1–4
You might take the time to pray for our parliament - the following prayers from the Anglican Prayer Book might be a guide:
A Prayer for Parliament
Most gracious God, ruler of all the nations,
we pray for the parliament of this Territory now assembled;
direct and prosper all its work
to the advancement of your glory,
and the safety and welfare of this country;
so that peace and happiness, truth and justice,
may be established among us;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
An extract from the communion service prayers
We pray that you will lead the nations of the world in the ways of righteousness and peace, and guide their rulers in wisdom and justice for the tranquility and good of all.
Bless especially your servant Charles our King, his representatives and ministers, his parliaments, and all who exercise authority in this land. Grant that they may impartially administer justice, restrain wickedness and vice, and uphold integrity and truth.
