Celebrating 50 Years of Our Cathedral: 1977-2027

On 13 March 2027, Christ Church Cathedral will mark a significant milestone: 50 years since the consecration of our present Cathedral building. This anniversary provides an opportunity to give thanks to God for his faithfulness across five decades and to celebrate the people, ministry and witness that have shaped our Cathedral community.

The story of our Cathedral is inseparable from the story of Darwin itself. On Christmas Eve 1974, Cyclone Tracy devastated the city and reduced the former Christ Church building to rubble, leaving only the porch standing. In the months that followed, while worship continued in temporary accommodation, plans were made for a new Cathedral that would serve both the Diocese and the wider Darwin community.

The new Cathedral was designed to incorporate part of the surviving porch and stone salvaged from the ruins of the earlier church. Construction began in 1976, and on Sunday 13 March 1977, in the presence of the Archbishop of Canterbury, the new Christ Church Cathedral was consecrated. The occasion was described as "a day of triumph and contrasts, combining solemnity and festivity, ritual and informality. It was an end and a beginning."

Just weeks later, Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh visited the newly consecrated Cathedral, further cementing its place in the story of post-Tracy Darwin.

Today, fifty years later, the Cathedral continues its ministry as the spiritual home of the Anglican Diocese of the Northern Territory, a place of worship, prayer, community service and gospel witness in the heart of Darwin. As we approach this anniversary, we want to celebrate not only a remarkable building, but also the generations of faithful Christians who have worshipped, served and proclaimed Christ here.

Anniversary Celebrations in 2027

Diocesan Thanksgiving Service

Saturday 13 March 2027

The centrepiece of our celebrations will be a combined diocesan thanksgiving service held on the 50th anniversary of the Cathedral's consecration.

Invitations will be extended to:

  • The Primate of the Anglican Church of Australia

  • Our Metropolitan Bishop

  • Clergy and congregations from across the Diocese

  • Civic leaders and Darwin dignitaries

  • Former members and friends of the Cathedral community

This service will be an opportunity to reflect on God's faithfulness through the challenges of Cyclone Tracy, the rebuilding of Darwin, and fifty years of ministry in this place.

We will soon be seeking Cathedral members and volunteers to join a planning team to help organise this significant occasion. There will be opportunities to assist with hospitality, logistics, historical displays, communications, welcoming guests and many other aspects of the event.

Special Anniversary Concert

Dry Season 2027

Later in the year, during Darwin's dry season, we are planning a special anniversary music concert to celebrate the Cathedral's rich musical tradition.

As part of these celebrations, we are exploring the possibility of commissioning new musical compositions written specifically for the Cathedral's 50th anniversary. These works would commemorate the story of the Cathedral, the rebuilding after Cyclone Tracy, and the continuing work of God through his people in the Northern Territory.

Further details about performers, repertoire and dates will be announced as planning progresses.

Share Your Memories

Over the next year we hope to collect stories, photographs and memories from former and current members of our Cathedral community. Whether you were present at the consecration service in 1977, helped rebuild after Cyclone Tracy, sang in the choir, served on parish teams, or simply found a spiritual home here, we would love to hear your story.

As we prepare for this special anniversary, we give thanks for those who have gone before us and pray that Christ Church Cathedral will continue to be a place where people hear the good news of Jesus Christ and come to saving faith in Him for generations to come.

"To God be the glory, great things he has done."
