Parish Council Update - September meeting

At its September meeting, Parish Council gave thanks for God's ongoing work among us and discussed a range of matters affecting the life and ministry of Christ Church Cathedral.

We reflected on a busy season of ministry, including weddings, funerals and baptisms, and considered what it means to serve as the Cathedral parish. Council also noted a number of recent property improvements, including car park upgrades, tree removal, painting and refurbishment works, and improvements to our AV systems.

A significant refurbishment of the Harbour Room is now underway, including new paint, carpet and curtains. We are pleased that these works are being funded from property funds set aside in 2025, allowing us to refresh an important ministry and meeting space without impacting current ministry budgets.

Council also noted plans for the painting of the Cathedral ceiling. This work will complete the insurance-funded fan replacement project and represents the final stage of restoring the affected areas of the building.

One area of concern continues to be antisocial behaviour around the Cathedral precinct, including litter and discarded syringes. Council agreed that further engagement with Darwin City Council and other authorities is needed to help improve safety around the Cathedral grounds.

Council reviewed our financial position and began discussing the establishment of a Future Ministry Fund. At present, parishioner giving is sufficient to fund our core ministry activities, including one ordained minister and parish administration, but it leaves limited capacity for additional ministry staff or new ministry initiatives.

Parishioner giving continues to fund the ministry and mission of the Cathedral, while car park revenue largely covers the significant costs associated with maintaining and improving the Cathedral site and buildings. Looking ahead, the proposed Future Ministry Fund would help create opportunities for future ministry growth beyond our current staffing and operational capacity.

We also discussed the future direction of parish ministry, including children's ministry, small groups, and the direction of our Sunday services. Plans are underway for surveying the church members - through the Australian National Church Life Survey, a volunteer role survey and a general ministry survey. A key priority remains strengthening and growing participation in the life of the church.

Safe Ministry compliance was another important focus. Updated records have given us a clearer picture of where we stand, and work is continuing to ensure volunteers and ministry leaders have the required training and clearances in place. Council reaffirmed the importance of these requirements for those serving in ministry roles.

Council discussed the possibility of trialling a projector for use during services. This is being explored as a way of reducing the amount of paper printed each week while continuing to support congregational participation. Work is underway to understand what equipment and facilities would be needed before any trial could proceed.

Finally, Council identified several volunteer needs across the parish, including music, AV and administrative support roles. In coming months we plan to survey the congregation about gifts, interests and opportunities for service so that more people can be connected into ministry.

Please pray for wisdom for Parish Council, for the growth of the gospel at Christ Church Cathedral, and for all who serve in ministry across our parish.
