Should We Move to WhatsApp Communities?
Should We Move to WhatsApp Communities?
We’ve been thinking about whether WhatsApp Communities could help us communicate better as a church.
A simple structure seems to make sense:
Church Announcements (whole church)
Social Events (by church service - whole church things can be shared in announcements)
Practical Requests (whole church)
Growth Groups, Choir and other groups
One idea is to make the Practical Requests group whole-church, not service-based. That could help us care for one another across generations—whether it’s practical help, energy, or wisdom.
On privacy: WhatsApp Communities now include a phone number privacy setting. When enabled, most members won’t see each other’s numbers (though admins still can, and contacts already saved remain visible). This is a meaningful improvement on standard group chats.
There are also advantages in oversight and care—for example, including Growth Groups within the structure—and in simplicity, with admin able to add people to groups as they connect.
As we consider this, the key question is simple:
Will this help us communicate clearly and care for one another well?
We’d love your thoughts.
